Limerick’s Mungret Park reaches green milestone for Green Flag

Mungret Park has received its first-ever Green Flag Award. The Green Flag Award is the international benchmark for quality parks and green spaces, operating in 30 countries worldwide

THIS YEAR marks a landmark achievement for Mungret Park, which has received its first-ever Green Flag Award.

The achievement reflects the dedication of the Parks Department at Limerick City and County Council (LCCC), who are responsible for the maintaining the vibrant, accessible, and environmentally responsible space.

LCCC continues to demonstrate its commitment to excellence in public green spaces, with multiple local parks recognised in the prestigious Green Flag Awards 2025, which were announced by An Taisce, The National Trust for Ireland.

Officially opened in 2016, Mungret Park spans 25 acres and offers walking and cycling trails, an inclusive playground, a dog park, and outdoor fitness facilities, all set against the historic backdrop of Mungret College.

Other Limerick parks that are continuing to be well cared for include Adare Town Park, which retained its Green Flag status from 2024, and The People’s Park, which continues to uphold the standard of quality public green spaces.

In addition to these achievements, Lough Gur Lakeshore Park and Visitor Centre earned the Green Heritage Site Accreditation for its unique historical and cultural significance.

Abbeyfeale Town Park and Abbeyfeale Biodiversity Park also received Green Flag and Green Flag Community Awards, highlighting the vital role of local volunteers and community groups in enhancing public green spaces.

Speaking on the awards, Carmel Lynch, Senior Executive Engineer for Environment and Climate Action at LCCC, said: “We are thrilled to see Mungret Park achieve its first Green Flag Award while The People’s Park, Adare Park and Lough Gur continue to stand out as leading examples of quality public parks.

“This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, sustainable green spaces for everyone in Limerick.

“We also extend our congratulations to the Abbeyfeale organisations whose dedication and community spirit have earned them well-deserved recognition,” said Carmel.

The Green Flag Award is the international benchmark for quality parks and green spaces, operating in 30 countries worldwide.
Ireland continues to lead Europe, with more Green Flag sites than any country outside the UK, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to sustainability and high environmental standards.
