A MAJOR milestone achievement for Mary Immaculate College (MIC) has been welcomed as their new state-of-the-art library building project officially receives approval.

Kieran O' Donnell TD welcomed its approval, which means that it can now in principle proceed to the key detailed design and pre-tender stage by Minister for Higher and Further Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD.

“This is a major milestone achievement for Mary Immaculate College in its plans for the building of a new state of the art Library building on campus at the South Circular road, which will greatly benefit the student experience," he said.

Deputy O' Donnell has worked with President of MIC, Professor Eugene Wall on progressing this state-of-the-art new Library project for the college.

Senator Maria Byrne, who has also been working with Professor Wall for two years, welcomed the news.

She said she was glad to see that the project is gaining momentum.

"This is something I have been raising with government since my first election to Seanad Éireann, The Library was built in 1978 and 250 seats were provided for 750 students. The college now has over 5,000 students," she added.

She stressed Mary I is now the forefront of teaching training in Ireland and therefore: "this is news that is very important in ensuring the development of the facilities for our students."
