THE University of Limerick was the venue for the first-ever fully inclusive sports day for school children in Limerick.
This groundbreaking initiative aimed to provide a platform where children of all abilities could participate, compete, and experience the joy of sports in an inclusive environment.
Niall Shanahan, a teacher in Knockea NS, Ballyneety, spearheaded this event at UL, along with ambassador for the event, Irish Olympian Thomas Barr, bringing together children from various schools, backgrounds, and abilities to participate in a day of fun-filled sporting activities.
Sports included track races, football, soccer, GAA coaching and parachute games, while other events included face painting, free ice cream and magic with magician Konor Halpin.
Supported by Athletics Ireland, Limerick Sports Partnership, Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership (LEDP), and John Paul Construction, the sports day also saw Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Francis Foley, enjoying the fun in the sun.
Vital for the Limerick community that these sports days are available for children of additional needs, Niall said: “I wanted to give children with additional needs the opportunity to showcase their talents.”
Looking forward to continuing the tradition Niall is looking forward to hosting the next fully inclusive sports day for 2024.
