A garda came across the man sleeping in the doorway of a lane

A MAN with over 100 previous convictions has been brought before Limerick District Court.

Dean Mulqueen, 29, of no fixed abode, was found sleeping in a doorway on Lady’s Lane in Limerick city by a garda on patrol on February 11, 2025.

Prosecuting Inspector James Ruddle said in garda evidence that drug paraphernalia was found beside Mr Mulqueen.

When the garda searched his bag, a pair of scissors and a box of blades were found in Mr Mulqueen’s possession.

The scissors and blades taken from Mr Mulqueen were presented to Judge Eamonn Carroll in a plastic bag for inspection. The judge commented that the blades appeared to be brand new.

Barrister-at-Law Reginald Garrett, representing Mr Mulqueen, said that the accused was highly intoxicated at the time of the offence, and no effort was made to ask why the scissors and blades were in his possession.

Inspector Ruddle detailed that Mr Mulqueen has 131 previous convictions, some of which are for the possession of drugs, public order offences, thefts, criminal damage, and a number of road traffic offences.

In mitigation, Mr Garrett said Mr Mulqueen - who was serving a custodial sentence when he was presented before the court - is eager to get out and re-enter society.

“I would say he has lots of previous … but the blades weren’t produced. He just had them,” Mr Garrett said.

Judge Carroll convicted and sentenced Mr Mulqueen to a two months’ imprisonment for the possession of an article.
