A YOUNG MAN has been convicted of dangerous driving in Rathkeale at Newcastle West District Court.

Giving evidence, Prosecuting Inspector Gearóid Thompson detailed how Detective Michael Reidy encountered Michael Mulcaire driving a BMW over ramps “a bit too fast” at 1.30 pm at Abbeyland, Rathkeale on May 25, 2025.

Detective Reidy attempted to speak to Mr Mulcaire to warn the man about his driving, but the man refused to stop his car.

The detective chose not to pursue Mr Mulcaire as it can often “make things worse” and could have led to an escalation of the situation.

The detective then went to the man’s house at Abbeycourt, Rathkeale, the next day, and found that he had no insurance policy for his car.

Solicitor Julianne Kiely stated in mitigation that Mr Mulcaire is 26 years old, has no previous convictions, and has a working history.

Ms Kiely further stated that Mr Mulcaire obtained this vehicle with a mind to take part in apprenticeship, and that he does apologise for his actions.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican convicted and fined Mr Mulcaire €500 for careless driving and having no insurance, giving him 12 months to pay the penalty.
