GARDAI have confirmed they are investigating a shooting incident in Limerick city overnight.

Sergeant Natasha Walsh, of Henry Street garda station, appealed for witnesses to come forward.

“Gardaí are investigating a serious incident involving a firearm which occurred on the Childers Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning,” said Sgt Walsh.

Limerick Live understands the gun attack took place in the vicinity of a halting site. No injuries have been reported. It is thought that properties were shot up.

A scene has been cordoned off on the Childers Road amid a major garda operation this Tuesday. Around a dozen garda patrol cars responded to the location.

A video has been widely shared on social media which shows squad cars parked up on both sides of the road and garda forensics officers taking photographs.

The area is being preserved for technical analysis by garda tape.

Limerick Live believes that a joint An Garda Siochana /  Department of Social Protection operation was planned for the location on the Childers Road this Tuesday morning and the shooting incident was a coincidence.

Sgt Walsh asks any members of the public who were in the vicinity of the Childers Road shopping centre between midnight and 2am and noticed anything suspicious to come forward.

“Also, if you were passing the area during those times we would ask you to check your dash- cam footage, and contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061-212400,” said Sgt Walsh.

Anyone with any information can also contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
