A garda spokesperson confirmed gardaí received a report of an incident of burglary that occurred at a commercial premises in the Main Street area of Rathkeale, County Limerick on Thursday, August 21 at approximately 2am.
“A number of items and a quantity of cash have been reported as stolen. Investigations are ongoing,” said the garda spokesperson.
Cllr Teskey, outgoing chairperson of Limerick City and County Council's Joint Policing Committee (JPC), said the superintendent (Michael Fleming) has his full confidence but “he needs to have the adequate resources”.
“I will be calling for specialised units in relation to these targeted crimes. At the end of day, small businesses like this are the backbone of our rural economy.
“They're the backbone in terms of supporting the local authority with commercial rates and we as a local government need to use measures to protect these businesses that seem to be vulnerable to these spate of crimes,” said Cllr Teskey.
The Fine Gael councillor said “now, more than ever, we need more gardai”.
“That is the message I'm sending loud and clear to Phoenix Park and especially to the incoming garda commissioner that it's not just Dublin that needs to be resourced, our rural towns and villages in particular,” said Cllr Teskey.
He asks anyone with information about the burglary to contact gardai on 069 20650.
