Major drugs haul at Shannon Airport after plane diverts following Heathrow closure

With the assistance of detector dog Brody, Revenue officers seized approximately 40kgs of herbal cannabis worth around €800,000

INVESTIGATIONS are underway following a significant drugs seizure in Shannon Airport.

In a statement, Revenue says officers seized approximately 40kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €800,000 this Friday morning.

"The illicit drugs were discovered, as a result of risk profiling and with the assistance of detector dog Brody, in vacuum sealed packages which were unloaded from a flight that had originated in Toronto, Canada," said a spokesperson.

It's understood the flight was one of six early-morning flights which were diverted to Shannon Airport after a fire in London forced the closure of Heathrow Airport.

Revenue says the seizure is part of its ongoing operations targeting organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs.
