A MAN has been charged at a special court sitting in Kilmallock in connection with the seizure of €200,000 worth of cocaine.

James Quinn, aged 52, of Cois Rioga, Caherconlish, county Limerick appeared before Judge Patricia Harney this Sunday afternoon.

Detective Garda Anthony Harnett gave evidence of arresting, charging and cautioning the accused in Henry Street garda station on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Quinn is charged with possession of drugs and possession of drugs for the purpose of sale or supply contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977.

Det Garda Harnett said Mr Quinn made "no reply" to each charge after caution.

It is alleged that the cocaine was found in a vehicle at the N20, Ballyouragan near Croom on Friday.

Inspector Gearoid Thompson, prosecuting, said there was no objection to bail subject to a number of conditions.

The bail conditions include handing in a cash surety of €1,000, not to commit any offences and be of good behaviour, sign on three days a week at Roxboro Road garda station, surrender his passport and remain alcohol and drug free in public.

John Herbert, solicitor for Mr Quinn, made an application for free legal aid on behalf of his client.

“He has significant health difficulties. He hasn’t been able to work for quite a while,” said Mr Herbert.

Judge Harney granted free legal aid to Mr Quinn.
