Man conned out of €2k in Limerick city rent scam

Gardaí issue advice, saying 'always be suspicious' when looking for accommodation

Man conned out of €2k in Limerick city rent scam

AN ACCOMMODATION scam in Limerick has seen a victim conned out of over €2,000.

Gardaí in the city have issued a warning and advice to potential renters, after a man in his 30s believed that he was in contact with a legitimate accommodation owner and agreed to rent a house in the Ennis Road area.

He made two transactions to a bank account that amounted to over €2,000, but has since discovered that no such accommodation exists.

“This man has very few details of the scammer that would assist gardaí in identifying them,” said Sergeant Ber Leetch of Henry St garda station.

“Always be suspicious when booking accommodation and ask yourself the question – if this is a Scam what details do I have that would assist gardaí in identifying them?”

Sgt Leetch also said it is always a good idea to meet the potential landlord in person at the accommodation, pay by visa card only and “if they refuse either, of the above requests, pull out of the deal”.
