Spring clear-out event to bring secondhand finds and community spirit to County Limerick

A UNIQUE community event taking place in County Limerick is encouraging people to clear out their attics and declutter their homes - all in aid of a worthy local project.

The Spring Clear-out, happening on Saturday from 12pm to 3pm at the Montpelier-O’Briensbridge Community Hall, will bring together a selection of preloved homewares, furniture, upcycled pieces, books, flowers and more, offering visitors the chance to pick up one-of-a-kind items while supporting the redevelopment of the old school in Montpelier into a community centre.

There will be also be teas, coffees and sweet treats available on the day so it’s a perfect opportunity to come together for a
cuppa and a chat. The event will also feature a strong community element, with local clubs and organisations taking part - including the Shannon Paddlers and the Shannon Dragons.

The Shannon Paddlers, a thriving kayaking club with over 100 members, will be offering a rare opportunity to purchase items from the recently acquired Ryan Inn in the village, including a selection of vintage furniture from inside the pub - giving visitors the chance to take home a piece of local history.

Meanwhile, the Shannon Dragons - a dragon boating club for breast cancer survivors and supporters will be on hand to share information about their inspiring work promoting wellbeing, fitness and connection on the water.

Organisers say the event is about much more than buying and selling.

“This is about connection - bringing people together around something simple, positive and meaningful,” Committee PRO, Catriona O’ Donoghue, said. “It’s a chance to let go of items we no longer need, give them a second life, and come together in a relaxed, welcoming environment - all while supporting the development of a more inclusive, multipurpose community space for everyone.”

Visitors are encouraged to make a day of it, with the village offering scenic walks along the River Shannon, including the popular Old Barge Loop Walk and the shorter Shannon Loop with views of Parteen Weir.

With only a couple of days to go, organisers are encouraging people from across the wider Limerick area to come along and support the initiative.

Committee Chairperson, Paul Slattery, added:

“We’d love to see people travel in, bring a friend, and enjoy something a little different. Whether you’re looking for a unique find, an unexpected bargain, a good chat, or simply a nice way to spend the afternoon, there’s something for everyone.”

Stallholders are also still welcome to take part, with spaces available for those looking to sell a small selection of quality items.
