UL has reminded students of its code of conduct following the creation of the new Instagram account
A NEW Limerick-based social media account which has amassed almost 5,000 followers in less than two months has raised eyebrows.
The UL Sleeps Instagram account, asks students to “send in pictures of your friends/classmates sleeping, bonus points for face close-ups. If you can handle the backlash dm us.”
A spokesperson for the University of Limerick said this account is not affiliated in any way with the college. UL has reminded students of its code of conduct which includes unauthorised recording/filming of any meeting/event/individual without their express consent.
“The UL Student Code of Conduct, which is in the 25/26 Handbook of Academic Regulations and Procedures, covers the expectation that students will not engage in any conduct or activity, likely or calculated, to infringe the rights or lawful activities of others on the UL campus or to bring the University into disrepute, whether on UL property or otherwise.”

The UL spokesperson continued: “It lists what is considered to be an offence and includes unauthorised recording/filming of any meeting/event/individual without their express consent, or to generate false images or audio or visual or other files based on recordings of any UL staff or students.”
“There is also a social media and online use policy for UL staff and students that allows for appropriate action to be taken against individuals when an allegation of a breach has been made. If that content is deemed to be potentially illegal, the University will report it to the appropriate authorities.”
The Limerick Leader has been in contact with one person who has reported the account to Instagram.
The UL Sleeps Instagram account did not respond to a request for comment.
