Friends of the Hunt Museum launch memorial lecture to celebrate founders

THE FRIENDS of the Hunt Museum proudly launched the first-ever Hunt Family Memorial Lecture, marking the beginning of a new annual tradition. 

Held in the Hunt Museum Limerick, the lecture is intended to celebrate the lives and legacy of John and Gertrude Hunt, whose remarkable private collection formed the foundation of the Hunt Museum.

Held on Thursday, September 18, the inaugural lecture, titled “The Irish Country House: A New Vision,” was delivered by acclaimed author and architectural historian Robert O’Byrne.

Robert explored the evolving story of Ireland’s historic country houses, which were once synonymous with decay and decline, but now increasingly celebrated as sites of restoration, revitalisation, and renewed family life.

O’Byrne highlighted a fresh narrative, offering insights into the histories and recoveries of some of the nation’s most remarkable historic homes.

Robert is a former Vice-President of the Irish Georgian Society, a trustee of several heritage foundations, and author of over a dozen books. 

He also runs the award-winning blog ‘The Irish Aesthete’ and is currently completing a doctorate at Trinity College Dublin.

Following the lecture, guests enjoyed a lively reception featuring canapés and live music performed by Arno Kilhoffer and Nora Casey, adding a festive close to an inspiring afternoon.

The Friends of the Hunt Museum, who organised the event, plan to make the Hunt Family Memorial Lecture an annual highlight, continuing to celebrate Irish culture, history, and the enduring vision of the Hunts.
