IN A powerful tribute to her mother’s mental health advocacy, a Limerick woman is organising a pop-up charity shop to raise money for Limerick Mental Health Association and a new out of hours mental health service.

Corbally native Sinéad O'Keeffe said the event is “deeply personal” to her and that her mother Noirín De Barra always spoke openly about her own struggles with mental health and advocated to reduce the stigma surrounding it.

Noirín passed away in March this year and Sinéad returned from New Zealand at a day's notice and luckily made it home in time to say goodbye. “Noirín always felt very strongly about improving mental health services in Limerick and expressed ideas for a community space... in a non-clinical more inclusive setting.”

The pop-up shop, Dress to Impress with Fashions for Less, will take place at Wickham Way market in Limerick city on Saturday, August 16 from 10am to 3pm.

Speaking about the idea for the charity event, Sinéad said: “The idea occurred to me straight away as my mother loved charity shops and had an array of beautiful clothes which I'll be selling as well as other donations”.

“She spoke on Live 95fm encouraging others to support local charity stores. She also held a similar event in 2018 where she raised over €500 for Grow Ireland and mental health awareness”.

She explained: “I wanted to channel the pain into something good. It started with just wanting to do a memorial for my Mam but then also trying to sort out her clothes and then attempting to follow in her footsteps with a charity event, with the goal to make a difference and improve the mental health services in Limerick”.

Everything on sale at the pop-up shop will cost just €5 with clothes, accessories, books and bric-a-brac all on offer.
