WITH filming resuming after the Christmas break in Limerick city for the new movie 4 Kids Walk into a Bank, starring Liam Neeson, roads are temporarily being closed, and excitement continues to build.

Despite last week’s cold weather, Robbers Production has pressed on with shooting in Limerick and will continue filming this week until Friday, January 17, according to Limerick City and County Council.

The Council announced temporary road closures to accommodate filming on Hartstonge Street, Catherine Place, Catherine Street, and upper and lower Glentworth Street this week.

However, there’s more local ties to the 4 Kids Walk into a Bank venture than meets the eye and a unique link to the city has been uncovered.

Wild Atlantic Pictures’ co-founder Eoin Egan, who hails from Castletroy, is collaborating with Robbers Production on the movie.

Another noteworthy point is the Director of Photography (DP) for the film, Bob Richardson, is renowned for working closely with Quentin Tarantino.

All of these factors combined mean that “more exciting things are to come” for the city in 2025.

“We are dealing with royalty such as Neeson and Richardson,” said Paul Ryan of Film in Limerick.

“Richardson is one of the top five DPs in the world and has worked on films such as Kill Bill and Inglourious Basterds. To have him in the city and photographing, it is really interesting.

“We also have lots of local crew from the region working on it. The last time we had a film of this scale was Angela’s Ashes.”

Mr Ryan added, “Being able to attract international production crews here is a testament to the emergence of the Mid-West.”

Limerick is poised for more cinematic opportunities following the success of Bonhoeffer, which ranked fourth at the U.S. box office behind Gladiator 2, Wicked, and The Red One.

Depicted as Berlin and London in Bonhoeffer - a production with a $23m budget - Limerick is proving to be a dynamic choice for filmmakers worldwide.

So, what’s happening behind the scenes of 4 Kids Walk into a Bank? Golden Globe-winning actor Liam Neeson is described as “highly professional and focused” on set. Meanwhile, the city’s transformed locations, adorned with “trolleys, bubblegum machines, and storefronts,” attract crowds of onlookers daily.

“There’s lots of excitement around the different locations,” said Mr Ryan. “That is a key approach we have in terms of attracting international productions here, we are so friendly as a region. 2025 is looking very positive.”

4 Kids Walk into a Bank is based on a five-issue limited series of novels released in 2016, written by Matthew Rosenberg and illustrated by Tyler Boss.

The story follows four nerdy teenagers, Paige, Stretch, Berger and Walter, who turn to crime.

The film is expected to hit screens at the end of the year, with filming in Limerick set to wrap in the coming weeks.
