Limerick medical firm's donation 'could mean saving a life'

Newest school in city gets a boost thanks to Fleming Medical

Limerick medical firm's donation 'could mean saving a life'

LIMERICK’s newest school has received a boost after a potentially life-saving donation from a local medical firm.

Fleming Medical has given a defibrillator to Limerick Community Special School in Mungret.

Opened last September, the school provides for children with a moderate general learning disability and complex needs, as well as youngsters with autism.

Its students are aged between four and 18 years of age.

Staff from Fleming Medical, a family-owned company located at Dock Road, installed the device in the school last month.

Principal Deirdre Bourke said having the defibrillator on the premises is especially important for schools like hers.

“Emergencies in a special education setting can present unique challenges. Having a defibrillator on-site ensures we are prepared for medical emergencies where every second counts. We’re not just receiving a machine, we’re being gifted the ability to provide immediate care, which in some instances, could mean saving a life.”

Defibrillators are used to support people who have gone into cardiac arrest, and accessing one within the first few minutes of this significantly boosts survival rates.

Mark Fleming, the founder of Fleming Medical said: “Every school, workplace, and community space should have access to one.

“Our goal is to ensure lifesaving equipment is available where it’s needed most, improving emergency preparedness across Ireland.”

He added the donation aligns with his company’s broader initiative to place defibrillators in schools, workplaces, and public spaces nationwide.

The company hopes to encourage other organisations to invest in emergency preparedness.
