An ice cream parlour is to open at the former tourist office in the city centre
FIFTEEN new jobs look set to be created in the city centre with a new ice cream parlour set to open in the former tourist information office.
The unit at the junction of O’Connell Street and Thomas Street is to be home to Limerick’s second branch of Gino’s Gelato.
It will be the chain’s 30th store nationally, and joins a branch in the Crescent Shopping Centre at Dooradoyle.
Owned by Adare man Anthony Murphy and Jonathan Kirwan of Wicklow (pictured below), the pair will be giving a new lease of life to the tourist office, which has been largely out of use for the past two years.
Nationally, Gino’s Gelato employs 600 people on a seasonal basis.
It first opened in 2008 in Newbridge, Co Kildare.
The fit-out of the store on Limerick’s main thoroughfare is under way, although it is unclear when the new premises will open.

A spokesperson for Gino’s Gelato says the firm is trying to get a local influencer or celebrity to cut the ribbon at the official opening.
Before the tourist information centre moved into the corner unit, it was home for decades to Ferguson’s Pharmacy.
This firm closed in 2009 after 70 years trading in the city centre.
