A LIMERICK businessman’s act of kindness has given a local teenager a cycle-logical boost.
Derrick Amrein, who runs Chisel and Oak at O’Curry Street in the city, was horrified to hear from a regular customer how a young student had his bike stolen at knifepoint.
The first-year student at St Munchin’s in Corbally, who lives in South Circular Road near Derrick’s shop, was chatting with his friends when his high-end red Trek bike was stolen.
“This should not happen to a child in a modern society. It’s shocking. It could be any of our kids. It’s terrible that somebody would do this,” Derrick added.
He said he wanted to show the lad that the majority of people in the world are “very good and very kind”.
So after being told about the theft by one of the boy’s teachers, he told her: “Send him in and we’ll see what we can do about it”.

The student himself did this, and picked out a new bike which Derrick gave to him for free.
“He loved it. He was over the moon,” smiled Derrick. “He missed his bike and hanging out with his friends with it.”
The bike donated was a like-for-like replacement.
