BREAKING: Full details revealed of how the people of Limerick City voted in Presidential Election

INDEPENDENT Presidential candidate Catherine Connolly has topped the poll in Limerick City, with 17,659 votes, or 64.53% of the first preference vote.

The Galway TD, who is on course to become the 10th President of Ireland - and is likely to be elected on the first count.

Locally, she was well ahead of Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys who secured 7,797 votes (28.89%).

And third was Fianna Fail's Jim Gavin, who won 1,533 votes in Limerick City (5.68%).

This came despite him suspending his campaign and withdrawing from the race earlier this month.

The turnout in Limerick City was 40.9%, with 31,038 people having their say.

The number of spoilt votes or invalid papers totalled 4,049.

Like the rest of the country, the results from Limerick City are being sent to Dublin to be checked by Presidential returning officer Barry Ryan.

After submission of all first count results, he will then calculate the quota for election. Then he’ll decide on the next steps regarding elimination of a candidate and the distribution of transfers.

If, as is looking increasingly likely, Ms Connolly secures more than 50% of the vote, then she will be declared President of Ireland.

The sorting and voting of votes in both the Limerick City and Limerick County constituencies took place at the Woodlands House Hotel in Adare this Saturday morning.
