BREAKING: Gardai investigate suspected arson attack on busy Limerick petrol station

Garda at the Inver Service Station on Old Cork Road this Monday

LIMERICK gardai are investigating a suspected arson attack on a petrol station in the early hours of this bank holiday morning.

Limerick Fire and Rescue Service crews bravely entered the highly dangerous and flammable situation at the Inver Service Station on the Old Cork Road, Limerick city and extinguished the fire.

A garda spokesperson confirmed gardai and firefighters were alerted to a fire at a premises on Old Cork Road, Limerick, shortly after 3.30am this morning, Monday, June 2.

“The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported. The premises was vacant at the time. 

“The scene has been preserved for examination and investigations are ongoing,” said the garda spokesperson.

It is understood that windows in the shopfront were smashed and some form of an accelerant used. It is not known if the perpetrators stole any goods from the store.

Three Limerick Fire and Rescue Service appliances rushed to the scene and spent almost two hours ensuring the site was safe.

A spokesperson for Inver said: "We confirm that there has been an incident at the Inver forecourt on the Old Cork Road this morning. The emergency services are onsite." 

The inside of the shop is believed to have suffered significant fire and smoke damage.
