LIMERICK'S Mungret Community College has been selected to participate in the upcoming basketball World Games later this year.

The event will take place in Valencia from November 5-9.

The school's U19 Boys team has been selected to travel to Spain towards the end of the year and excitement levels within the school are high, as teacher Pádraic Kelly explains:

"We are absolutely delighted to share that our U19 boys basketball team has been selected to participate in the upcoming World Games. The event will take place in Valencia, Spain in November.

"The event receives huge numbers of applications every year and we were thrilled to be picked to represent Limerick and Ireland. The team earned this opportunity through a combination of consistent performance, dedication, and success in national-level competitions.

"Their commitment to training, teamwork, and representing the school with pride played a significant role in their selection.

"This team has set the standard for boys basketball in our school winning multiple regional titles and winning the first boys All-Ireland title in our school. We have been unlucky in recent years with some injuries disrupting our season but it is great to get the squad back together.

"We have travelled all over the country for games in recent years and there is a great bond between the players. We have worked with the lads since first year and the progress they have made is incredible. It is a deserved opportunity for them to play on an international stage," Pádraic said.

Fundraising efforts for the trip in November are already well underway.

"The team is busy fundraising for the trip at the minute in between training with school and clubs and are looking for sponsors who may be willing to come on board. If you are interested in supporting our journey please contact the school directly," he added.

Captain of the team Max Turski says the team are very excited at the prospect of representing the school this year.

"We are all very excited to represent our school and our country on an international stage, It is a great opportunity for us to display our talents as a team. We know the task ahead of us won't be easy but we are ready for the challenge."
