Memories - 20 years - John the champ wins the stamp of approval


LIMERICKMAN John Fulham got the surprise of his life when he saw his likeness on the new 28p stamp which was launched this week by An Post to mark the forthcoming Paralympic Games in Atlanta.

The current Irish wheelchair record holder at 400, 800, 1,500, and 5,000 metres, John’s photograph was one of the many submitted by the Irish Wheelchair Association for consideration but it came as a major surprise when working colleagues at the Allied Irish Bank’s clearing offices in Donnybrook in Dublin jokingly informed him that his picture, in athletic pose, was on sale nationwide at 28p.

“I was invited to a photo call by An Post about a week previous but did not think that I would be chosen. Now that all the slagging is dying down I am getting a bit more used to all the publicity.”
