Memories – 10 years – Sinking under sea of refuse in city

Environment

ST MARY’S Park is “slowly sinking under a sea of refuse” giving rise to serious health concerns, local councillor John Gilligan has claimed.

The independent councillor has told members of Limerick City Council’s environmental policy committee that “the place can look like the third world at times,” especially along Oliver Plunkettt Street and that “if the World Health Organisation went down to have a look they would be scandalised.”

Cllr Gilligan said that it had been reported that the council was among a number of local authorities who had hired private investigators to combat illegal dumping but that none had ever been seen round the estate on the island. He urged officials to install a camera to catch those who litter. The Council are to do a survey on who does and doesn’t have a bin collection.
