Creative event for the Samaritans takes place in Doon this Saturday and Sunday

A 24-HOUR event to knit the community together takes place in Doon this weekend.

For the second year in a row, Norah Collins has organised a 24-hour craftathon. It takes place in the village’s pastoral centre from 1pm on Saturday, August 8 to 1pm to Sunday, August 9.

Norah invites crafters to come and join them, and raise money for the Samaritans.

“Crafters of all kinds take part so if you knit, sew, crochet, paint, do papercrafts or scrapbooking or any form of craft activity then Doon is the place to be,” she said.

Those with no experience are also welcome. There will be a craft shop, raffle, cake sale, coffee morning and evening.

Last year’s craftathon was a massive success with over €2,300 to help the charity which offers emotional support 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to anyone who is in distress, lonely, struggling to cope or feeling suicidal.

Since last year’s event, Norah said that a Knit & Natter Group has been set up in Doon.

“We continue to meet every two weeks to knit and crochet, have a laugh, a good natter and play a fun game of bingo to finish up.

“Over the past 10 months we have knitted hats for the premature baby unit in Limerick’s maternity hospital, made and donated hearts to end of life care at UHL, gave blankets to the children's BUMBLEance service, along with making items for ourselves,” said Norah.
