INVESTIGATIONS are continuing following the seizure of almost 20kgs of Khat at an apartment in Limerick city centre yesterday.

INVESTIGATIONS are continuing following the seizure of almost 20kgs of Khat at an apartment in Limerick city centre yesterday.

Two Ethiopian nationals were arrested following a ‘controlled delivery’ which was carried out by gardai in a joint operation with Revenue officers in the Mount Kennett area of the city.

According to a Revenue spokesperson, 18kgs of Khat was seized during the pre-planned operation. The drugs have a street value of around €36,000.

Khat, which is a controlled substance in Ireland, is a stimulant with similar effects to amphetamine.

Users chew the leaves of the shrub which is native to parts of Africa.

Following yesterday’s seizure the men were taken to Henry Street garda station for questioning under Section 2 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
