MORE than 40 teams are preparing to battle it out to be named "Limerick's Fittest Superstars".
Hurling legend Davy Fitzgerald says he's looking forward to the event which will take place at Mungret St Paul's GAA Club on Saturday, May 20.
The former Clare goalkeeper and current Waterford manager is a founder and coach on Ireland’s Fittest Family, the RTÉ TV show that sees families battle it out on an obstacle course hoping to become Ireland’s Fittest Family
Now, he has adapted that concept as a roadshow event that stops by GAA clubs across the country allowing team mates to become opponents as they take on challenges and obstacles such as the 10-foot wall and 'the ramp', which are firm favourites on the television series.
“That's the big thing here, right? There's two or three aspects, it's a competition and you want to win it. But also, I promise there will be fun in it. There is another aspect where you need the four to work together and think about things because otherwise it's not going to happen for you," he told Limerick Live.
“You have to take on 12 or 13 obstacles. If you lose two or three seconds at an obstacle, then your time is in trouble. I want it to be a test. I want it to be fun. I want people to say, yeah, I really enjoy that. I'd love to do it again,” he added.
Although a proud Banner man, Davy’s mother hails from Limerick and the current Waterford hurling manager is hoping that the people of Mungret are ready for a challenge on the day.
“It is tough. But the one thing you have to remember about most of the events is five to six minutes, that's what it is. And you're getting killed for them in five or six minutes. But after that, the buzz working with your family or working with your team at doing something.
“Normally you go out and you play a game, you might be doing a lot of it on your own, be it golf or whatever, or your corner forward on the field or whatever. Here you really depend on the other people just as much, and it's as much about being smart as his fit, being honest,” he added.
A total of 45 teams are set to participate in the competition with other family-friendly events taking place on the day including a Kids Zone, music and DJs
