WATCH: May Day celebrations spark off with string of bonfires in Limerick city

MAY EVE celebrations are in full swing in Limerick city as traditional bonfires take place across the city.

A smell of burning plastic can be smelled while plumes of thick smoke can be seen from miles around.

As of 6.30pm, members of Limerick Fire Service and several units were dispatched to the scenes of six fires at St Mary's Park, Talbot Avenue, Carew Park, Ballinacurra Road and Raheen Square. 

Children as young a six were seen playing in the vicinity of bonfires in St Mary’s Park. Some were seen by the Leader bringing, furniture and toys such as scooters and bikes to add to the fires.

In Garryowen, a number of youths were seen attempting to start a fire in the green using plastic and timber as fuel.

One of the largest bonfires is located at Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra, where a significant amount of rubbish including mattresses, chairs and tires were set alight.
