A VIADUCT on the Limerick to Foynes rail freight line has now been finished, marking another milestone in the major project.
The Robertstown viaduct is a 46-metre installation and work on the steel structure took place over the past year.
Works are now due to start on the concrete bridge deck and incorporating an embedded rail system.
Work started on the route in early 2023 and boundary fencing is now almost finished.
New track laying started in Askeaton last month and it’s expected that all track will be laid by the end of this year.
The next phase of the project will include a signalling system for the route, CCTV level crossings, a train communications system and track connections and upgrades at the port.
The project is funded by the Department of Transport and National Transport Authority and subject to funding allocation, it’s expected that the next phase will take about a year and a half to finish.
It’s hoped the rail freight will be ready for operations in December 2025 with freight services starting in early 2026.
The viaduct was installed by resident engineers O’Connor Sutton and Cronin, main contractors John Sisk and Son Ltd, Gabriel O’Brien Crane Hire Ltd and Mack Engineering.
