New housing scheme will deliver 111 homes to Limerick village

WORK on the first private housing development in Patrickswell village in more than 30 years is underway.

Over 100 homes will be available to buy later in the year and, this week, the Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien, visited the An Tobar site along with local councillors.

“This is magnificent news for Patrickswell, it's the first housing development since 1987. We've been 35 years waiting for private investment in our community. We now have it. We have that investment from the private sector due to the hard work that has been done by the council over the last number of years, investing in the public realm, investing in community facilities, and today is a brilliant day for our community to see that when you invest in our communities, it attracts private investment and it's absolutely a brilliant day,” said Cllr Dan McSweeney.

Located 10 minutes from Limerick City Centre, the village is just minutes away from the M20 motorway.

“It's a prime location. It's five minutes on the road to the industrial estate in Raheen where there's significant jobs coming over the next number of years. We have so much potential here in Patrickswell. We're linked in with the cycle lane, active travel. There's loads of different options available. There's the bus service and it's just a brilliant community to live in,” the Fine Gael representative added.

With the Government's First Time Buyers scheme, it's hoped young people from Patrickswell will be able to purchase some of the new homes in their local community.

“The locals have welcomed this development, their children, their grandchildren, will now be able to purchase homes in the community they were born and bred in and that's really important. I'm aware of locals that have had to move as far away as Ballingarry, Charleville, because there's been no other opportunity to purchase homes in the locality,”added Cllr McSweeney.

Local publican and independent councillor, Fergus Kilcoyne, has also welcomed the delivery of the new homes.

“This is a major development for the local people here in Patrickswell because up to now the local people had to go and buy in surrounding parishes and now that there's houses being built, the first time buyers grant is available and they can come back and buy here in Patrickswell, which is great for the young people and to see them getting on the ladder, buying their own houses.

Minister Darragh O'Brien added: “For the first time in 20 years, we've affordable homes to purchase with more social homes than we've ever built before. And yes, we need private developments, good private developments like this where people can buy and lots of renters out there want to be able to buy homes, and it's about increasing the supply.”

The homes at An Tobar are being developed by Lioscarran Group and are for sale via the Sherry FitzGerald Group.
