CONSTRUCTION has officially launched at the old Office of Public Works (OPW) building on Mallow Street in Limerick city to bring 12 single-bedroom apartments as part of a regeneration project by Peter McVerry Trust.
The construction of the site located at two and three Mallow Street costs a total of €3.5 million and was officially launched by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien.
Peter McVerry Trust is a national housing and homeless charity with an office in Limerick committed to reducing homelessness and the harm caused by substance misuse and social disadvantage.
Once completed the 12-single-bed apartments will be available to those on the local social housing waiting list.
CEO of Peter McVerry Trust Pat Doyle believes the regeneration project is “very important”.
“The city requires one-beds, 55% of all homeless people in the city require a one-bed unit… It’s very hard to get developers to build one-beds so approved housing bodies like the Peter McVerry Trust are trying to lead the way by going out there to secure sites.
“It’s also valuable because this is a derelict site - it has been empty for the last six years and now we’re bringing it back.
“It’s also important because this is the Georgian Quarter and we’re trying to bring back the Georgian Quarter in Limerick, so we were under the microscope here to make sure that we got it right, I think we did and within the year we will be giving 12 people the key to the door and changing their lives hopefully forever,” Mr Doyle mentioned.
In 2022, Peter McVerry Trust supported over 12,000 people nationally, including over 400 people in Limerick who availed of housing and resettlement services.
The charity currently manages over 113 homes in Limerick City and County and will shortly launch the first 14 homes in its modular home project in Delmege Park, Moyross.
