A HOSPITAL team who helped to save the life of an infant has been honoured with a Limerick Person of the Month Award.
The extraordinary event involving the urgent care of the baby took place at University Hospital Limerick last June.
The baby was admitted unconscious with a significant neuro condition, requiring immediate surgical intervention to prevent irreversible neurological damage or death.
The swift and decisive actions of General Surgeon Mr Eoghan Condon, who performed a craniectomy, were critical in this life-saving procedure. He was supported by emergency medicine consultant and ICU specialist Dr Jonathan Roddy, anaesthetist Dr Shane Moore, registrar Dr Michael O'Sullivan, including senior scrub nurse Ms Joslen Fernandes and her team.

Despite Mr Condon being a general surgeon, and the team lacking neurosurgical specialist input at the hospital, their professionalism and courage in this unfamiliar and challenging situation prevented a tragic outcome.
Thanks to their efforts, the baby was safely transferred to Temple Street for further treatment and has shown no neurological deficits or evidence of permanent brain injury.
Speaking to Limerick Live at the awards presentation in the Clayton Hotel, Mr Condon said:
“We’re so happy that everything worked out really well and very grateful that the outcome was good.”
"Obviously, there’s an awful lot of people to thank when you do an operation like this, anaesthetist Dr Roddy, Dr Moore, consultants, paediatricians, Siobhán Neville, Nurse Fernandes, who assisted with the operation, so all those people come together to get this result and we’re really grateful for the acknowledgement of the Limerick Leader, the Clayton Hotel and also Southern Media and the HSE," added Mr Condon.
He said his colleague, consultant paediatrician Dr Neville has met the baby a couple of times and that she's doing really well.
All of this year’s winners of Limerick Person of the Month will be invited to attend the Limerick Person of the Year ceremony early next year.
The award is sponsored by the Limerick Leader, Southern Media and the Clayton Hotel.
