A FIRE has destroyed a historical building in the heart of Limerick city centre early this Saturday morning.
The Sailors’ Home on O’Curry Street was built in the 1850s built and according to historian, Dr Paul O'Brien, now "social history [is] up in flames."
Emergency services including several units from Limerick Fire and Rescue attended the scene of the fire at 1:02am.
Six units from three different fire stations, Limerick city, Cappamore and Rathkeale attended the scene to combat the blaze.
Having then dampened the flames, after almost four hours of relentless efforts, the units returned to base at 4:50am.

A garda spokesperson said: "An examination of the scene will take place this morning.
No injuries were reported, but investigations are ongoing."
According to local resident, Randel Hodkinson, the site was an "absolutely beautiful and historic building - probably the finest building on O'Curry St and in our area."
David O'Brien, Chief Executive of Limerick Civic Trust said: "The Limerick Civic Trust have for many years sought to restore and occupy this beautiful old building, we now wish to work with all parties, the Shannon Foynes Port Authority, their agents and others to bring this site back to to original glory."
