As we begin the countdown to this weekend’s Munster Senior Hurling Final Joel Slattery looks back at one of Limerick’s most famous wins against Cork – the 2001 victory in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
That was the last time Limerick beat Cork in Pairc Ui Chaoimh when they had a 1-16 to 1-15 win in front over 42,000.
Now 13 years on, the county’s hurlers look to emulate that achievement by beating the Rebels in their own back yeard.
Ollie Moran played a big part in that game scoring three invaluable points.
“We were written off by most people coming into that game,” Moran recalls. “We were hammered by Clare in the League so most people didn’t give us a chance.”
Corner-back on that team Stephen McDonogh added: “Cork were favourites but we had prepared well. Eamon (Cregan, manager) had us really, really well prepared. Going down there we were quietly confident in our own ability.”
Check out some of the photos captured that day by Sportsfile - from the team photograph before the game to the celebrations in the dressing room afterwards.
