The final part of the night was a special tribute in memory to the late Martin Griffin. Martin was known throughout the county and further afield for his involvement with club and county and was held in high regard. Martin was on the club team that lifted the Minor title in 1971 and on the U-21 title in 1975 and also played on the last club team to lift the Donegal Senior Football Championship Trophy in 1977.
He would go on to be a key man in the 1980’s in his prime and had a distinguished career with Donegal, making his debut in 1973, winning 3 Ulster Senior Football Championships in 1974, 1983 and 1990 and was recalled to the Donegal Senior Team in 1990 at the age of 36 by Brian McEniff.
In 2004, at the sprightly age of 50, he made a brief return to playing and was part of the Senior Reserve Squad that won the Reserve Championship. Players from that time recall the huge lift and instant presence he had at training and games alike. Always smiling, always encouraging.
Nathan Griffin, a nephew of Martin, has produced a TV programme which will be aired on TG4 in the coming weeks. Those present were treated to a 10-minute sneak peak of what was a fantastic insight to Martin’s character by those who knew him so well. The video was well received by those present.
Charlie Collins held a panel discussion with Martin’s former club and county teammates and friends Michael Lafferty and Brendan Dunleavy. Unfortunately, one of the men who knew Martin best, Brian McEniff, was unable to attend but was kind enough to record a small video message for those present.
Martin’s daughters Annemarie and Donna were presented with a memento and a framed Seán MacCumhaills No. 3 jersey. Martin was a towering man and played the full-back role, one of the toughest but fairest at that, brilliantly known for his dominant performances. The club were delighted to have so many members of Martin’s family present on the night.
"We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all our attendees and supporters for making our awards presentation a success," said the club. "Many thanks to the businesses who donated for the spot prizes, Villa Rose Hotel (drinks reception), Harleys Cheers Bar, O’Reilly’s Sports and McElhinneys. Your support was greatly appreciated and played a vital role in the success of the event.
"Congratulations to all the above winners and to everyone who gives up their time to drive our club forward. Thanks to everyone who came out on the night to make it the success it is, and we hope you enjoyed your night."
