MONALEEN’S bid for a place in Whitebox Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final got a huge boost as the city side scored an upset win over Doon on Friday night.

Defeats to Ahane and Na Piarasigh had the Castletroy club favourites to drop down to the ‘B’ section for 2027 but their season was revitalised with this stunning win.

The win came on a weekend when another up-and-coming city side Mungret took a big step towards the knockout stages themselves.

Goals from Liam Lynch and Mark O’Brien helped them to a 2-20 to 2-16 win over Adare on Friday night.

With those clubs looking to make a breakthrough it was the defending champions who sent out a message with a real statement of intent.

Na Piarsaigh racking up 3-17 in atrocious conditions as they eased to victory over Ahane on Thursday in Claughaun.

While Daithi Dempsey, Eoin Brosnan and Dylan Lynch got the goals, it was Peter Casey who was the star of the show, notching up 0-5 from play.

Patrickswell set up a blockbuster of a Round 4 clash with Adare this weekend as they hit the net four times in an 11-point win over Garryspillane. Jason Gillane scored a hat trick for the winners in Fedamore.

Elsewhere this weekend, Newcastle West claimed a first victory in the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship in almost 40 years when they finished strong to defeat Kildimo-Pallaskenry.

The 2024 Premier Intermediate champions maintained their senior status despite failing to win a match last season after a remarkable run saw them draw three games in a row.

Cathal Hayes struck 1-7 for the winners on Thursday night, his second half goal the crucial score.

In the final game of the weekend on Saturday, Kilmallock continued their impressive campaign to date. They were ruthless in attack striking five goals past Ballybrown to finish the third round of action top of the table.

The Balbec had a brace of goals from Gearoid Enright, with Phelim O’Reilly, Shane O’Brien and Pierce Connery also finding the net against a Ballybrown side who were without Aidan O’Connor.

Round 4 takes place this week with the clash of Doon and Na Piarasaigh - a repeat of the last two county finals - the stand-out tie.
