'Real testament to the players': All-Ireland winning minor hurlers named Limerick Persons of the Month
Manager of the Limerick minor hurlers team, Diarmuid Mullins says hopefully the players ‘will go onto even bigger and better things’
LIMERICK’S All-Ireland winning minor hurlers have been named Limerick Persons of the Month in recognition of their huge success on the pitch.
The successful team was honoured at a presentation ceremony at the Clayton Hotel in Limerick city on Wednesday.
Speaking to Limerick Live, manager of the team, Diarmuid Mullins said:
“We’re just delighted to have won the award and it’s a real testament to the 37 players in the backroom team. It was a great achievement to finally get over the line and they’ve been fantastic all throughout the year so they got their reward by winning the All-Ireland.
“It’s fantastic and they’re a bunch of young players that hopefully will go onto even bigger and better things.”
All-Ireland Minor Hurling champion Shane Waters, who captained the Treaty to winning the competition for the first time in 42 years became the first Na Piarsaigh clubman to captain Limerick to an All-Ireland victory.
Shane said seeing the senior hurlers immense success pushed them on this year.
“When they win it kind of gives you a boost. It gives everyone a boost in Limerick... It’s what you want.”
Limerick City and County Council also recently approved plans to give the All-Ireland winning minor hurlers one of the county’s top civic honours. Cllr Catherine Slattery proposed a civic reception be granted to Diarmuid Mullins’s charges.
Limerick took home the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship title after beating Tipperary 2-12 to 0-14 at the TUS Gaelic Grounds on June 27. It was a fourth ever title for the Treaty - and a first in 42 years.
The minor hurlers will proceed to the Limerick Person of the Year ceremony early next year, where the coveted award will be presented to one of the 12 recipients.
