October marks Mental Health Awareness Month, arriving at a pivotal turning point in our calendar. As autumn settles and we move toward winter, darker evenings and colder days can place real strain on our wellbeing.

For many across our communities, this seasonal shift triggers fatigue, low mood, depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Many people experience situational depression following bereavement, ill health, or traumatic life events. For others, depression becomes a chronic, debilitating condition.

Your mental health is a precious resource. Just as we mind our physical health through nourishing food, rest, and medical care when unwell, our emotional health requires the exact same proactive attention.

You do not need to wait until you reach breaking point or enter a crisis to seek support. Working with an accredited psychotherapist can bring long term benefits to your life.

Shifting the Narrative: What Happened to You?

When emotional distress sets in, we often fall into the trap of self-criticism, asking ourselves what is wrong with us.

At Trauma Matters, we are dedicated to shifting the narrative around mental health from what’s wrong with you? to, what happened to you? What experiences caused you to feel unworthy, powerless, or unsafe in the world?

Making sense of your experience with your therapist can be the first step to recovery and healing.

The roots of persistent suffering, anxiety, and low self-worth rarely appear out of nowhere. They often trace back to unresolved life experiences, prolonged stress, or traumatic life events.

Over time, these experiences act like outdated software programming how we view ourselves and the world around us.

Once installed, these negative beliefs function like a rigid filter. You notice only the evidence that confirms your self-doubt, while dismissing positive feedback or proof of your resilience.

Very often, the past is active in the present. When we react intensely to present triggers, we are frequently having emotional flashbacks without the visual picture, continually reliving old feelings and negative self-talk.

To break that cycle, we must update the underlying programming. By safely reprocessing distressing memories, your nervous system can finally file the past where it belongs, restoring a balanced and accurate perception of who you are today.

Two Proven Paths: EMDR and CBT for Depression

Professional clinical care offers distinct, evidence-based methods to support your recovery:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT works from the “top down”. It focuses on the direct connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. By examining negative thinking loops and introducing structured behavioural changes, CBT equips you with practical tools to interrupt depressive spirals.

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR works from the “bottom up”. Endorsed by the World Health Organisation, this therapy uses bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements) to help the brain reprocess stuck memories.

Instead of requiring you to talk through every detail, it resolves the underlying neurobiological charge, allowing past memories to reprocess and organically link to positive beliefs and safety in the present.

Building Your Winter Mental Health Toolbox

Professional therapy is a transformative resource, but everyday wellbeing also relies on simple, consistent habits tailored to your daily life:

  • Movement and daylight: Outdoor exercise, particularly in daylight, helps regulate your circadian rhythms and mood.
  • Time in nature: Connecting with the natural world calms an overstimulated nervous system.
  • Genuine connection: Regular, open chats with trusted family or friends help lift the weight of isolation.
  • Mindfulness and rest: Daily meditation, breathing exercises, and protected sleep routines give your brain space to reset.

Real healing takes time, patience, and commitment, but meaningful transformation is entirely possible. Build your toolbox, stay connected, and mind your mental health this winter.
