A WOMAN who attended Abbeyfeale garda station over an alleged issue with her neighbours ended up being arrested, Newcastle West Court heard.

Áine McDonnell, of Aras na Feile, Mountmahon, Abbeyfeale pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in the front car-park of Abbeyfeale garda station on July 19, 2022.

Garda John Maguire said the defendant was very intoxicated when she came to the station at around 7pm.

“She was a danger to herself. She was arrested for her own safety,” said Garda Maguire.

The court heard Ms McDonnell has previous convictions for public order, possession of drugs and criminal damage.

Edel Ryan, solicitor for Ms McDonnell, said her client had attended the garda station “to enlist help with her neighbours”.

Ms Ryan put it to Garda Maguire that the defendant was “in no way aggressive or difficult to deal with”.

 Garda Maguire agreed.

Ms Ryan said Ms McDonnell is 23-years-old and does not have many previous convictions. “She is engaging with services around alcohol - it was becoming a crutch. She hasn’t been in trouble since July 2022,” said Ms Ryan.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican fined Ms McDonnell €150.
