The walls of the former Debenhams building on O’Connell Street which is back open for the period around Christmas time
THE FORMER Debenhams building in Limerick city centre is back open for the first time in more than four-and-a-half years.
The landmark site at the junction of Sarsfield Street and O’Connell Street has been out of use since the British department store’s Irish arm was placed in liquidation in April 2020.
The move led to the loss of almost 100 local jobs.

But from now until Monday, December 23, the space is being used by Limerick School of Art and Design (Lsad) students to showcase their work.
The work of more than 100 talented artists is on display, with the exhibition offering a mix of mediums including fashion, fine art, ceramics, photography and sculpture.
Featured artists include Ann McBride, Lidija Savickaite, Gavin Hogg, Frank McCarthy (representing Paint Punch), Tina O’Connell, Shane Vaughan of Limerick Printmakers and many more.
The Christmas Showcase represents a unique opportunity for the public to engage with the incredible diversity and creativity of the region’s art community.
Mayor John Moran said: The transformation of the unoccupied Debenhams building into a vibrant pop-up gallery is a wonderful initiative that brings much-needed life and creativity to this important part of Limerick.”
Lsad Dean Mike Fitzpatrick said: “It's great to showcase work in the heart of Limerick, already there is great interest in seeing the art work and stepping inside this major landmark store in the city.”
The Christmas Showcase is free and open to the public.
