Dry spell to come to an end as Met Éireann forecasts torrential rain for weekend ahead

Ireland has certainly been enjoying a great stretch of dry and settled weather over the last few weeks but unfortunately all good things must come to an end.

Met Éireann has forecast torrential rain for the weekend ahead, and although no weather warnings have been issued, some countries will get hit worse than others.

High pressure will also slip away eastward as the weekend goes on giving way to low pressure meaning temperatures will become a lot cooler.

Carlow weather man Alan O'Reilly has said "Another cloudy day ahead Thursday and same Friday but the rain returns Saturday. Exact timing Saturday is little uncertain yet but rain could reach western areas by early morning. Back to raincoats for the parents on the sidelines this weekend. A big drop in pressure for the weekend but uncertainty for next week on how unsettled it will be."

Thursday

It'll be mainly dry but mostly cloudy today, with just a few limited bright or sunny spells. There'll be some mist and few isolated patches of drizzle. Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees in mostly light, occasionally moderate, easterly or variable breezes.

Continuing mostly cloudy and mainly dry tonight with just a few patches of mist and drizzle here and there. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in light or moderate easterly or variable winds, freshening a little in southwestern coastal parts.

Friday

Tomorrow, Friday, will continue mainly dry and mostly cloudy, with just limited bright or sunny spells. The odd patch of drizzle and mist is possible. Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees in light to moderate east or southeast winds, freshening in the southwest and parts of the west.

Friday night will be cloudy but mainly dry for much of the night apart from a few patches of drizzle and mist. Persistent rain will move into the southwest and west later. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees in freshening southeasterly winds.

Saturday

Saturday will be a cloudy, breezy day with rain in the southwest and west gradually spreading eastwards. The rain will be heaviest and most persistent in parts of the south and west later in the day, with some thundery falls and some spot flooding possible. It'll stay mainly dry though in parts of the east and northeast until the afternoon or evening. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in fresh and gusty southeast winds, stronger at times in coastal parts.

Saturday night will be wet and blustery, with some heavy falls of rain becoming fairly widespread, with some thundery bursts and some spot flooding likely. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in fresh, occasionally strong, and gusty southeast winds. Towards morning, a clearance will start to move into southwestern and western parts, with the winds veering southwesterly there and tending to moderate.

Sunday

Starting off wet at first in many areas, with some heavy rain for a time, especially in the east and northeast, with some thundery falls and spot flooding there. However, that clearance to brighter conditions in the west and southwest with some sunshine, will gradually extend eastwards to most parts through the morning, with the rain clearing from the east and northeast through the afternoon.

Showers will be following though from the west through the morning and afternoon, becoming fairly widespread and some will be heavy, with a slight chance of thunder. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees with the winds continuing to veer south to southwest as the persistent rain clears and will decrease mostly moderate, fresher at times in west and south.

Sunday night will bring some clear spells but with further showers, some heavy with isolated thunder and with the likelihood of some longer spells of rain in places. There'll be some mist and fog in parts too. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees in mostly moderate to fresh cyclonic variable winds, possibly stronger at times in southern coastal parts.

Monday

Monday will bring further showers or longer spells of rain, some of that heavy, with the chance of isolated thunder. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with in moderate to fresh northwesterly winds.

Tuesday

There'll be further showers on Tuesday, with the likelihood of a longer spell of rain in the north for a time. However, there'll be some sunshine too. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in moderate to fresh west to northwest winds.

Further Outlook

Low pressure will continue to dominate our weather for the rest of next week bringing further showers or longer spells of rain, but some drier brighter interludes too, with sunshine. It 'll be breezy at times and it looks like it may become a little cooler too.
