The extent of the destruction in county Limerick is only beginning to emerge as the sun rose and the Status Red warning nears its end at 10am.

Tens of thousands are without power in the city and county and there are dozens of trees reportedly down and blocking roads.

Meanwhile, also in Kilmallock, trees have been uprooted at the rear of the walkway at Coláiste Iósaef Secondary School which, like all schools, is closed today.

There was also a reminder of the most recent weather event locally with a mound of snow still pushed to the side in the industrial estate.

It is understood that the Gala shop on Sheares Street, Kilmallock, is open despite the town being one of many without power.
