President Trump greeted by local dignitaries before flying by Marine One to his Doonbeg resort
US President Donald Trump landed at Shannon Airport this afternoon before travelling by Marine One to Doonbeg, where he was due to attend the Amgen Iri sh Open at his Trump International Golf Links and Hotel.
Air Force One touched down shortly after 2pm, bringing President Trump west from Dublin as he continued his visit to Ireland.
The President was greeted on the tarmac in Shannon Airport by a number of political representatives and local dignitaries, including Limerick County TD and Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport Patrick O'Donovan.
The Newcastle West man was the first political figure introduced to President Trump after he descended the final steps of Air Force One. The two men shook hands and briefly spoke before the president continued along the line of dignitaries.
He was also greeted by Clare TD Timmy Dooley, Minister of State with responsibility for Fisheries and the Marine, Irish Ambassador to the United States Geraldine Byrne Nason, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council Joe Killeen and Shannon Airport CEO Ray O'Driscoll.
Following the brief reception, President Trump crossed the tarmac and boarded Marine One. The helicopter then flew him from Shannon to Doonbeg, marking the next stage of his Irish visit.
The arrival in Shannon followed a busy morning in Dublin, where President Trump met President of Ireland Catherine Connolly before travelling to Farmleigh House to meet Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
During his meeting with the Taoiseach, President Trump was asked whether he would return to Ireland next year for the Ryder Cup, which will take place at Adare Manor in County Limerick.
He confirmed that he planned to return, saying: “I will, absolutely. It’s a big tournament.”
There was also a protest presence outside Shannon Airport during the president's arrival, while the significant demonstrations of the day were held in Dublin, where large numbers gathered to protest against the visit and President Trump's policies.
A major security operation has been in place across Clare for the duration of the presidential visit and will remain in place until President Trump departs Ireland on Sunday evening.
For a short time this afternoon, Shannon Airport became the focus of international attention as Air Force One arrived and the US President stepped onto the tarmac.
Within minutes, however, he had boarded Marine One and was on his way to west Clare.
