A GARRYOWEN couple have lost an incredible ten stone between them after taking part in a top rating British reality show.
As part of the show, Gerard and Paula went up against 12 other contestants in a bid to try and lost the most weight.
And although they did not win the overall prize, they truly are winners, as our ‘before and after’ picture shows.
Speaking to the Limerick Leader, Gerard said his entire outlook on life has changed completely.
“I will be starting a personal training course in a few months, so hopefully I will become a qualified personal trainer,” he said.
To add to this, he will be taking part in the Great Limerick Run come May.
Meanwhile, Paula - who works as a teaching assistant - is looking to start a make-up course.
“I am happier in myself. I was very depressed before the show, but since coming out, I look and feel better. It has given me confidence to do things I would never have done before,” she explained.
Clothes-loving Gerard - who has dropped from a 48 inch waist to just 34 - joyfully said: “Now I can walk into the shops and buy anything”.
Although the couple returned to Limerick some weeks ago, they had to have regular weigh ins with ITV1 staff to ensure they remained in shape for the final of the show, which was only filmed last week.
Before they took part in the series, the couple - who met on the internet - never went out “because it was easier to lock the world out.”
“But since we came home, we have socialised a lot more. We are not afraid of walking down the street anymore,” Paula said.
Asked what advice she would give to people looking to lose weight, she added: “You have to get your attitude and mental state right. You must be truly in the frame of mind to want to do it. Ninety per cent of the battle with weight is all in the mind. Once you get over that initial battle, you are away.”
Ger - who applied for the show without Paula’s knowledge - said there are three key words: “motivation, dedication and determination.”
