TUS launches new apprenticeship pathway

Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has announced the rollout of a new Level 7 Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship.
The apprenticeship creates a pathway for manufacturing apprentices to progress from technician to engineer while remaining in employment.
The programme, launched at Manufacturing Solutions Ireland 2026 at the TUS Coonagh campus, will allow graduates of the existing Level 6 manufacturing technician apprenticeship to advance directly into manufacturing engineering studies, with the option to continue towards a level 8 qualification.
The three year apprenticeship combines paid employment with academic study, enabling participants to earn while they develop skills required for careers in manufacturing engineering.
Speaking at the launch, TUS President Professor Vincent Cunnane said the manufacturing sector is undergoing rapid transformation through artificial intelligence, automation and digital technologies.
“Industry needs more manufacturing technicians but it also needs more engineers. This new pathway creates opportunities for apprentices to continue their development, progress their careers and develop the skills that will be needed in the manufacturing sector in the future,” he said.
The apprenticeship is coordinated nationally by the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in partnership with Ibec and industry stakeholders, with TUS delivering the programme for learners and employers across the Midwest.
Trish Bren, Project Manager for the apprenticeships in Ibec, described the rollout as a “significant milestone” for the sector.
She said the programme would help equip apprentices with skills in areas such as robotics, automation and advanced manufacturing technologies, while strengthening the talent pipeline needed to support future growth and competitiveness.
The apprenticeship will commence in January 2027 and is supported by the Higher Education Authority and the National Apprenticeship Office.
TUS said the rollout forms part of it’s wider commitment to expanding apprenticeship education and addressing evolving industry skills needs.
This follows the launch of new apprenticeships in Software Testing and Road Surface Technology earlier this year.
