Nottingham Castle: This year's St Patrick's celebrations in the British city will have a distinct Limerick feel
THE TREATY flag will fly high over the River Trent this St Patrick’s Day as Limerick enjoys a one-year twinning with the British city of Nottingham.
Each year, the organisers of the Nottingham St Patrick’s Day festival link up with an Irish county for their celebrations.
This year, it’s the turn of Limerick to link up with the city in England’s East Midlands.

The centrepiece of the two-week long festival will take place on March 17 itself, when a concert will take place in Old Market Square in Nottingham city centre.
Michael Dalton, who is originally from Croom, will be the grand marshal of the festivities, while the gig will be headlined by country singers Muriel O’Connor from Limerick and Fran Curry from Tipperary.
Festival director Gerry Molumby, seated below with his committee, said that since the St Patrick’s festival started in Nottingham in 1999, they have identified a new Irish county to link up with each year.

“Limerick finally came out of the hat,” he laughed.
Each year, they pick a grand marshal who is from their nominated county.
Letters have been exchanged between Mayor John Moran and Nottingham’s city officials.
“It’s been very positive. His office has responded very quickly. It’s about making people aware of Limerick as a place to go and visit and have Limerick people know about Nottingham,” Gerry said.
