Glenstal Abbey have never won the Munster Schools Senior Cup, but they continue to be hugely competitive despite their small playing numbers.
FIRST UP: v Ardscoil Ris at 3pm on Wednesday, January 30 in Coonagh
COACHING TEAM: James Hickey, Aiden McNulty
LAST CUP SUCCESS: None
LAST SEASON: Lost 13-11 to PBC in quarter-final having earlier pushed eventual champions Rockwell all the way in the opening round
SQUAD: Ryan Johnston, John Healy, Michael Boland, Conor Buckley, Eoin Ryan, Conor Hughes, Eoin Hurley, Jack Boland, Rory Hogan, Gearoid Fitzpatrick, Hugh Connors*, Richie O’Hara*, Andrew Boland*, Michael Hogan, Cal Og Healy, Rossa Dooley*, Joe Hartnett, Dillon Kavanagh, Karl Glynn, Henry Beynon, Bernard Cosgrove, Max Ryan, Jamie McAleese, Mauritz Fincke, Matthew Ryan, Kevin O’Keeffe*. (Played last year)
CAPTAIN: Eoin Hurley
STAR MAN: Team captain Eoin Hurley, who can play in the centre as well as on the wing, is a good leader and a strong ball carrier.
Representative players: Kevin O’Keeffe and Jack Boland have played at representative level for Munster
Any other business: Out-half Kevin O’Keeffe has played golf for Ireland.
PROSPECTS: Despite having a limited pick, they continue to be competitive and last year they were only narrowly beaten by Rockwell and PBC. They play Ardscoil Ris in the opening round where a win would give them a quarter-final game against the losers of PBC and St Munchin’s. If they lose to Ardscoil then they’d most likely have to play CBC. Either way, it’s hard to see them get past the quarter-final stage
