Limerick Pool stars to fly Ireland flag at European championships

SIX Limerick lads are gearing up for a battle on the baize this weekend as they represent Ireland at the European pool championships.
Croagh man Neil Madigan, the chairman of the Limerick pool association, will join Caherconlish duo Evan Wright and Robert Mulcahy, Shane Kenny plus 13-year-old duo Cathal McNamara and Pierce Lynch who all travel to Killarney this Thursday.
They will represent various Irish age-group teams at the European Eight-Ball pool tournament, deferred from 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The competition is more open this year, Neil said, as many countries are fielding changed teams as they have not been able to hold pre-qualifiers as a result of coronavirus.
Around 300 people will contest the singles event, in group stages before a knockout route to the final. The Limerick players will head across to Kerry and stay for the week.
“It's a great feeling to play for your country. The best buzz you can have is walking into the ring and hearing the anthem. The hairs on your neck stand up,” Neil said.
Ireland will be the centre of pool’s earth this year, with the world championships also taking place in Killarney this October.
For Neil, it’s a game on the up, and both tournaments will offer great exposure.
The tournament runs from Saturday, February 5 until Thursday, February 10, with free entry to the Inec Arena Killarney. Selected matches will be streamed at euro8ball.com.
