Crescent College bow out of Munster Schools Senior Cup at hands of CBC

Action from Crescent College Comprehensive's Munster Schools Senior Cup quarter-final defeat to CBC at Thomond Park on Wednesday

CRESCENT College Comprehensive bowed out of the Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage after suffering a heart-breaking 21-19 defeat to CBC, of Cork, in a high quality game at Thomond Park on Wednesday.

Crescent looked well placed to advance to the semi-finals when holding a useful 19-15 lead at half-time.

However, two second half penalties from the boot of full-back Billy Cain helped steer the wind-assisted Cork side into the last four of the Cup.

Despite enjoying an advantage, both in terms of possession and territory in the opening quarter, Crescent found themselves trailing by 12 points at the end of the first quarter.

The Leesdiers had tries from second-row John Willis and centre Harry O'Riordan with full-back Billy Cain adding one conversion

A resilient Crescent College side came storming back, however, scoring three unanswered tries in the second quarter.

Winger Ben Carew gave Crescent a foothold in the game when he dotted down in the 24th minute. Captain Maccon Casserly struck for the Dooradoyle side's second try on the half hour mark, with Jack Delaney's successful conversion making it 12-12.

While Cain kicked Christians back in font at 15-12 from a penalty goal, Crescent finished the half in the ascendancy with number eight Jack Madden powering over in first half stoppage time. Delaney's conversion made it 19-15 at the break to the Limerick side.

The see-saw nature of the game continued with the re-start as a Cain penalty for CBC reduced Crecsent's lead to a single point, 19-18.

And a second Cain penalty with two minutes of normal time remaining ensured it was CBC who advanced to the semi-finals.
