John Galvin leads 'Celtics' to Limerick Basketball's sole senior win this weekend

John 'Slippers' Galvin scored 27 for the Celtics on Saturday

Limerick Celtics put in a huge 90-point display on Saturday evening to see them home to a big 90-83 point win over Dubliners KUBS in the Men’s Division One. A stand-out performance from John Galvin, who stormed home with 27 points and massive rebounds on the night, was coupled with a 25 point display from Michael Crane and a solid 17 points from Shane O’Connell to see them home to a big victory over the in-form KUBS side.

UL Sports Eagles were unlucky to lose out by three points to the very impressive Ej Sligo All Stars at home on Saturday meanwhile as, despite big displays from Tarchee Brown, Diarmuid O’Shea and Nate Moore, the visitors just managed to edge in front at the death and held on for a 78-81 point win.

A 20-point display from new addition, Taylor Williams, wasn’t enough for Limerick Celtics women’s team on Saturday night as they lost out on the road 72-49 to St Mary’s Castleisland in Kerry. Despite keeping with the hosts up until half time – trailing just 38-32 – St Mary’s found an extra gear in the second half thanks to Lorraine Scanlon and American Mia Hopkins, to see them drive on to a 72-49 point win.

UL Huskies were also on the wrong side of the result in their away game to Cup finalists, Ulster University Elks on Saturday afternoon. Abbey Goodsell and Abby Jeffrey led the way for the visitors with some superb runs at both ends of the court, but Elks’ ten-point lead at half time was maintained by the full-time buzzer to see them win out 89-79.

The winning continued for Limerick Celtics as they defeated Oblate of Dublin, 69-54 to win the U18 National Shield title in the National Basketball Arena. Congrats to all.
