Opinion: It will be exciting to see Limerick reach potential in 2019 - Jerome O'Connell

Limerick captain Declan Hannon lifts the Liam MacCarthy Cup

“WHAT would I like for 2019?” – pretty much the same as I would have said this time last year!

We ached, we cried, some had given up hope, but thousands simply wanted to see Limerick win an All-Ireland SHC title in their lifetime.

Well August 19, 2018 answered that dream.

I’m not being greedy, just honest – there is no sporting result that could please me more in 2019 than to see Limerick win the All-Ireland SHC.

Thousands upon thousands enjoyed the All-Ireland build-up and celebrations but personally I am one of those that hurling is everything in sporting terms.

When asked what I would like to see in 2019, it’s not about Limerick retaining the title, it’s just that the answer would be the same every year no matter the previous season.

But while we are on retaining the title – of course that would be sweet.

Never before achieved by Limerick.

And, way easier said that done.

Aside from kingpins Kilkenny, just Cork, Tipperary and Galway have ever retained titles – Cork last in 2005, Galway last in ‘88 and Tipp last in ‘65!

There is no denying the 42-man 2019 panel revealed for Limerick before Christmas is exciting and bursting with options.

One big bonus is that the Na Piarsaigh don’t have club commitments to curtail their chances so competition for places will be fierce.

For now, lets just hope for Limerick to reach potential and see where it takes us in 2019.
